- Cheese: According to The Huffington Post Reporter Meredith Melnick, dairy products are great for your teeth, with cheese topping the list. It is low in sugar and acid but high in calcium. It also contains casein, a protein found in milk that is “particularly useful for fortifying the tooth’s surface.”
- Strawberries: Ohio-based dentist and spokesman for the American Dental Association Matthew Messina says that strawberries are a good alternative to citrus fruits (whose high levels of acid can erode teeth). Strawberries do contain acid – but it’s malic acid, a natural enamel whitener.
- Calcium-fortified drinks: If you’re missing your daily orange, consider substituting in orange juice that has been fortified with calcium. The acidic levels are lower in juice and the calcium works against it. Other calcium-rich drinks, such as milk, are also great options for promoting healthy teeth and reducing the risk of tooth loss, according to the Academy of General Dentistry.
- Celery: Like most raw fruits and vegetables, celery is good for your teeth because its fibrous nature requires chewing – which generates saliva and helps clean plaque from teeth. Celery is particularly beneficial because it breaks down into fibrous strands that naturally clean teeth.
- Cranberries: Recent studies reported by the AGD have indicated that eating fresh cranberries can interrupt the bonding of oral bacteria to teeth before they can form damaging plague.
- Sugarless Gum: Messina says that sugar-free gum can help clean teeth by “stimulating the production of saliva.” Saliva washes away acids and bacteria in your mouth. It also washes your teeth with calcium and phosphate.
Dentists also recommend increasing your water intake to improve the health of your teeth. Water works like saliva and also contains fluoride, a mineral that protects against tooth erosion. Fluoride can remineralize teeth and even reverse the damage caused by acids.
