The 2011 Briarcliffe College baseball season ended with a group of exhausted but happy players diving onto each other on the pitcher’s mound at the Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. They were at the field for 12 hours playing the three back-to-back ballgames required to win the USCAA Small College World Series Championship.
The win was truly a team effort, as the pitching staff had an ERA of 1.75, the team batted .279 and the defense was nothing less than stellar. Thomas Butler was named Tournament M.V.P. and Joseph Russo, Chris Ahaern, and Joe Solomeno were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Because the Bulldogs suffered a loss in the double elimination tournament, they were required to defeat Southern Virginia University twice. That challenge was especially daunting, since those two games came on the heels of the Bulldogs defeat of Penn State University – Greater Allegheny in the day’s first game.
Head Coach Ed Jusino, along with Assistant Coaches David Lohman and John Parinello, were effusive in their praise of the team after a long, hard day on the field. They pointed out the physical and mental stamina that was required of the players not only for the day, but for the totality of the season.
The Bulldogs’ season began with a whole new coaching staff and with a 0-5 record, due to a February tournament in Hampton, Va.The coaches made it a point to have a team meeting focusing on how they would overcome the bad start by trusting the combination of talent and skills brought to the table by each and every player and coach. The results speak for themselves. Congratulations to the 2011 USCAA National Champions, the Briarcliffe Bulldogs.
