1. Sugarless Chewing Gum
According to the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Health Encyclopedia, sugarless chewing gum is a great way to generate saliva in your mouth. Saliva is responsible for removing food particles from your mouth.
Saliva is one of your best natural defenses against cavities and gum disease. It is important to maintain a steady production of salvia, especially after meals. If you tend to have a dry mouth, try chewing gum.
2. Wild Salmon
Joy Bauer reports on her Food Cures website that fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, are great sources of vitamin D—the same important vitamin found in dairy products.
Vitamin D is important because it helps your body absorb and use calcium, an important nutrient for the protection of your teeth and gums. According to Bauer, “The vitamin D found in salmon makes it easier for your teeth and bones to get the full power of calcium from the foods you’re eating.”
3. Green and Black Teas
These teeth both contain polyphenols which are substances that either kill or suppress bacteria. These types of teas can interact with plague bacteria specifically, “preventing them from growing or producing tooth-attacking acid,” according the University of Rochester.
The University also notes that, depending on the water you use, your tea may also be a good source of fluoride. (Most drinking water in the United States is infused with fluoride.)
