Finding the right job in the advertising and marketing industry can take a bit of work. Like any job, the key is to present yourself in a way that showcases your skills to your potential employer. Because marketing involves spotlighting a creative force, you'll need to let a potential employer know exactly what you will bring to the table. Here are a few tips on how to get a marketing job.
Cover it in Your Cover Letter
When you apply to marketing jobs, whether it be through an email request or a cold-contact, the employer will be primarily focused on your cover letter and resume. This will generally be the first impression the employer gets of you. There may be hundreds of resumes on his desk, so yours must stand out. One way to do this is to bring something different to the table. Of course, your resume should highlight all of your advertising and design skills, but you should also show how you can change or improve the department and company.
A good cover letter will grab the reader's attention by showing:
- how your experience directly relates to the job on offer.
- how you will improve business by connecting with customers and creating a new client base.
- new ideas that you will bring to your position.
- how you will apply your digital knowledge and the tools you use to market, leverage and grow the company brand.
Draw the employer in with the skills you bring to the table and the experience you can apply to the job.

Just like every company has a brand, you should, too. This means you should sell yourself and your skills to your potential employer. Use the skills you already know about communication, marketing, graphics and design, but always be up to date with cutting-edge business knowledge through ongoing education.
