SoLoMo (Social, Local and Mobile) may sound like the latest dance craze, but it's actually a cutting-edge marketing tool. You've probably already used this technology but didn't know what it was. If you've "checked in" to a location via Foursquare or Facebook, or if you've downloaded a business's app and given it permission to access your location, you've used it. If you've checked in at a particular business to get a discount, you've used it. SoLoMo is an ingenious way that businesses are capitalizing on the fact that just about everybody carries a cell phone and is more than happy to use it to share their activities with their friends.
Fifteen years ago, businesses had to use signs in their windows to attract the attention of passersby. SoLoMo hasn't just changed the rules; it has changed the game.
Send a customer a push notification as they're driving by your business that says, "Hey, we just got a new shipment! Stop in now for a 15 percent discount!" Or, send a notification to customers as they walk through your door and give them a heads-up on offers based on either their previous purchases or their social media interests.
Now, you can target your customers while they're on the go and near your location, making it easy for them to tell their friends about it. You can reach people who care about the right things and enlist their help in spreading the word — right through their phones. It's any marketer's dream!
As an up-and-coming marketer, you have a huge advantage. According to Entrepreneur, only 60 percent of small- and medium-sized businesses have a social media presence, and even fewer use SoLoMo. That means you have a huge opportunity to teach your employer what it is and why they should use it. It could be the key to your career success.
