The job market is definitely tough out there, but there are some tips you can follow to try and edge out the competition:
- Apply to many jobs: There is no limit on how many jobs you can apply for, so apply for as many as you want. The more jobs you apply for, the better your chances are of finding one and the better prepared you will be in the future.
- Network: Talk to other students, faculty, or alumni. They always say it’s who you know, so make who you know count!
- Get a job on campus: If you hold a steady job throughout your college career, or even manage to get a position like an R.A., you are going to stand out against other candidates with less stable work histories. It is important to prove you are responsible enough to keep a job for an extended period of time.
- Sharpen your resume: If you are unsure of how to make your resume look more visually appealing, talk to a faculty member or an advisor to see if they have any tips on how to improve it. Keep it short and only list key job responsibilities. If it is full of paragraphs describing every job you’ve ever had, you are likely to get passed over for someone else with a more concise resume.
