Athletics Department Recruits Long Island-Area Athletes to Join Inaugural Women’s Soccer Program in Fall 2012
BETHPAGE, N.Y., APRIL 18, 2012 — Briarcliffe College will add a new women’s varsity soccer program beginning this fall, just in time for the 2012 academic year. The College has already started recruiting women from the Long Island area.
The program will be the College’s eighth athletic team and its fourth for women, joining women’s basketball, bowling and softball, along with men’s baseball, bowling, lacrosse and soccer. The new women’s soccer team will play in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) conference.
“We have been planning to add a women’s program for some time, and ultimately made this decision based on the overwhelming interest from our students and the community,” said Gina D’Amaro, Briarcliffe College director of athletics. “We hope this is just another benefit for our talented and well-rounded students.”
Rafael Morais, head coach of the Briarcliffe men’s soccer team, will also coach the women’s team. Morais joined Briarcliffe in 2008 and led the men’s team to win the USCAA National Soccer Championship in his first year. They were finalists in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He has an extensive background coaching men’s and women’s soccer teams. Morais was the women’s Puerto Rican National Team head coach in 2010 and runs a soccer academy in Suffolk County.
“My goal is for the women’s program to be competitive from the start and add to Briarcliffe’s success in the USCAA conference,” Morais said. “Our athletic teams are an invigorating aspect of our campus life; we take great care in launching new programs and building our teams.”
