Bethpage, NY…June 22, 2009 In 2009 alone, Briarcliffe College has introduced three new concentrations and received approval from the New York State Board of Regents to offer a B.S. in Criminal Justice degree program. Now, Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago, Jr. has announced the State’s approval for the introduction of an A.A.S. degree program in Paralegal Studies.

“Briarcliffe College is committed to offering study areas and degree programs that resonant with the interests of our student body and prepares our graduates for gainful employment,” said Dr. Santiago. “I am proud of the academic leadership that has created this Paralegal Studies program and thank Provost Dr. Sonia Heywood, Dean of Students Caroline Zebrowski, Criminal Justice Department Chair Rachel Andoscia and Liberal Arts Department Chair Brian Schorr.”

The four-year proprietary college with campuses in Bethpage, Patchogue and Queens, focuses on career education and will launch the Paralegal Studies program this September at its Bethpage and Patchogue locations. Earlier this year, Briarcliffe introduced new concentrations in healthcare, animation, and international business, as well as the B.S. in Criminal Justice. The new degree program falls under the auspices of the College’s Criminal Justice Department and according to Department Chair Rachel Andoscia, “The Briarcliffe College A.A.S. degree program in Paralegal Studies is designed to provide the student with legal theory and contemporary practical law office skills for employment in law firms, government agencies, corporate legal departments, insurance companies, real estate, banks, and court systems.”

Classes will be taught by highly qualified, experienced attorneys from the private and public sectors, as well as leading paralegal professionals. The Paralegal Studies program includes required and elective courses covering: Introduction to Law, Legal Aspects of Business, Estates, Trusts and Wills, Legal Research and Writing, Family Law, Cyberlaw, Law of Property, Litigation, Torts, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Health Care Law.

A final course is designed to prepare students to take the National Association of Legal Assistants Certification Examination, earning those who pass, the title “Certified Legal Assistant.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 33 percent growth rate for employment of paralegals through 2010 and projects the job rate for paralegals and legal assistants to grow much faster than other professions in the next 5 to 10 years.
