A Career in Medical Home Care Services can Enhance Your Nursing SkillsThe need for quality medical home care is on the rise, and at the forefront is the demand for nurses. If you are interested in obtaining your bachelor's degree in nursing, you should know that you won't be restricted to just working in a nursing home or hospital setting. By branching out through home care, you can specialize in a certain niche within the nursing field.

Enhance Your Nonclinical Skill Set

One advantage of seeking a medical home care position after you obtain your Bachelor of Science in Nursing is that you can focus on caring for the patient's psychosocial needs. In addition to the acute nursing care you will provide, you must also consult with the patients or their family to determine additional needs to make your patients comfortable or stable in their home environment.

If you are wondering whether home care is the right choice for your nursing career, ask yourself the following questions. If you can answer "yes," to all of these, you may be a good candidate:

  • Do you have excellent critical thinking skills?
  • Are your decision-making abilities above average?
  • Do you possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills?
  • Are you well organized?

These are skills that you will need in order to branch out into home care. With time and experience, you will learn to master these abilities and utilize them throughout your nursing career.

Nursing Specialties

By obtaining additional credentials and continuing education credits, you can specialize in certain types of home care. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, you will be able obtain a specialty in a particular field if you choose to do so. The advanced knowledge you will gain will give you an opportunity to work in a particular area of interest. Patients who return home after a hospital stay often require specific types of specialized care from a licensed nurse. Here are just a few examples:

  • Wound and ostomy care
  • Hospice and palliative care
  • Intravenous care
  • Cardiac care
  • Gastroenterology
  • Oncology
  • Pain management
  • Pulmonary care

Because patients often require varying care levels, you can choose a specialty in order to expand your career options. Many specialties can also be an advantage when applying for other nursing positions, even if they are not in home care.

Diverse Work Environment

If you love the challenge of working in a different home setting throughout the day, home care enhances your experience because you will be in a changing environment. Helping others rest in the comfort and independence of their own home as opposed to a skilled care facility can be very rewarding. Traveling from home to home will allow you to showcase your variety of caregiving skills as you give each patient personalized care.
