Athletics Can Enhance Academics Many students considering college are warned about the dangers of athletics; sports are time-consuming, exhausting and distracting. However, athletics can be what you make of them. They can positive affects if you let them, and joining a sports team proves fruitful for the academic development of many students. Find out how college athletics can enhance academics:

Time Management

While athletics are often time-consuming, learning to deal with time constraints is a vital lesson for your future. Students spend their free time doing something – it’s simply a matter of choosing your activities wisely. If you decide to join a college sports team, you can learn how to balance your schedule between two important commitments: academics and athletics. You should strive to keep the commitments you make, but remember these tips throughout the year:

  • Never put athletics before academics; they are extracurricular activities.
  • Use the academic benefits your team offers: study groups, tutoring services and the support of your coach and a close group of peers.
  • Let your instructors know that school is your first priority. Don’t let them question your dedication by skipping class or turning in assignments late.

Work Ethic

Athletic teams require dedication, especially as you balance your time between sports and school. This practice instills a good worth ethic to your character, which many employers look for in new hires. You can make the most out of your time in higher education by not only doing well in class but also participating in activities that build your character. Use extracurricular activities and athletics to learn about yourself and develop your good qualities.

As you learn about yourself, you can also start to learn about others. Noticing differences helps you understand people and communicate well. The teamwork you can develop through athletics promotes respect, collaboration, creativity and productivity, all of which are valued in the classroom and professional world.
