Top Ten Tips for Online Learners

April 11, 2012 Online 0 Comments

Online LearningOnline programs allow you to learn using innovative methods in flexible environments. If you’re curious about online learning but not sure where to start, find out more about online programs by exploring these top ten tips for online learners.

  1. Find the learning method that works for you. In an online program, you have the option to learn by reading, watching, or listening. Figure out which method works best for you by trying online reading material, instructional videos, or podcasts of lectures.
  2. Plan your study time ahead. Online learning is great because you don’t have to leave home or study at the same time every day. But it helps to set up a study schedule in advance to make sure you have enough time to meet deadlines every week.
  3. Keep up to date on school news and events. Knowing what’s going on at your school helps you take advantage of social and educational opportunities. It’s your responsibility to meet deadlines, so keep an eye out for changes.
  4. Always ask for help. The biggest mistake that online learners make is not taking advantage of the support their schools offer. You have constant access to instructors and advisors, so make a habit of reaching out when you have questions.
  5. Take notes. Since you’re not in a traditional classroom, you probably don’t feel like taking notes. However, jotting down important info can make your study time more effective and engaging. You absorb more material when you take notes, whether you do it while reading or watching videos, and notes give you an accessible study guide when you’re preparing for tests.
  6. Engage in your school’s online community. Many online students don’t realize how easy it is to socialize with other students. Check out your school’s website to join study groups, chat rooms, and forums.
  7. Stay in touch with your instructors. Forming a bond with your instructor can help you get a good handle on the course material. Instructors are more than happy to answer your questions, so keep in contact.
  8. Seize opportunities for hands-on experience. A great way to get the most out of your education is to participate in both curricular and extracurricular activities. For example, you can opt in through video feed to listen to live speakers hosted by your school. Also, don’t forget to talk to your advisor about internship opportunities.
  9. Meet with your advisor often. By making regular appointments with your advisor, whether they’re in person or on the phone, you’re more likely to get answers to your questions and stay on track to get your degree.
  10. Take your classes seriously. Online learning can be easier on your schedule and your gas tank than traditional school, but that doesn’t mean it’s easier on your brain. Don’t enroll in an online program if you’re not prepared to commit the time and hard work required to complete a degree.
