Dental Hygiene
As the demands for access to oral care increase, there is a need to improve the diversity and flexibility of the dental workforce. As a result, dentists and dental practices are working in novel models of care, where the responsibilities for patient health education and preventative care are in the hands of dental hygienists. As many dentists hire dental hygienists for part-time work, a dental hygienist may have more than one employer; work full or part time, offering a great deal of flexibility. Dental hygienist’s duties include among others conducting periodontal examinations, taking intraoral and extraoral radiographs; performing periodontal (gum) treatments; applying sealants and fluoride treatments and providing oral health education.
Briarcliffe College’s Dental Hygiene program includes lecture, laboratory and clinical components, and supervised experiences in an on-site dental hygiene clinic. So, if you’re attentive, caring, and would like the flexibility of working full or part-time in clinical settings, a career as a dental hygienist could be right for you.
