Briarcliffe College’s President Honored As A Top Advocate For Latinos

Briarcliffe President Among Inaugural Long Island Honorees Recognized for Empowering Latinos

BETHPAGE, N.Y., APRIL 10, 2012 — Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago, Jr. will be honored on Tuesday, April 10 as part of the inaugural class of “Long Island’s Top 25 Advocates for Latino Empowerment.” The award honors Long Island community members who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement and empowerment of Latino Americans.

Throughout his prolific, 26-year career, Dr. Santiago has been an advocate of education opportunities for Latino Americans. He created Briarcliffe College’s Hispanic Scholarship program, and has been honored by numerous associations for his leadership in education, including the Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association in 2011, and La Fuerza Unida, Inc. in 2010. Santiago was also named 2009 Educator of the Year by the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“Providing educational opportunities to the underserved has been my personal and professional passion for decades,” said Dr. George Santiago, President of Briarcliffe College. “Providing Latino students and others a personalized educational experience that helps them gain the knowledge and career skills needed to reach their potential is a responsibility that we take seriously at Briarcliffe.”

The Hispanic Network, the event sponsor, will host an awards ceremony from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Woodlands, One Southwoods Road, in Woodbury, NY. Other honorees include representatives of the Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association, Mercy Medical Center and State Farm. The Hispanic Counseling Center of Nassau County, a comprehensive human services organization that serves over 1,400 clients each month, will benefit from the evening.
