(Bethpage, NY - July 21, 2010) Briarcliffe College has awarded Luis J. Bermeo, of East Hampton, NY with a $5,000 Hispanic Scholarship based on his qualifications, academic record, teacher recommendations, and winning essay. Mr. Bermeo, a graduate of East Hampton High School, begins classes this month as a Criminal Justice major at Briarcliffe College’s Patchogue, Long Island campus.
"Mr. Bermeo came to Long Island from Ecuador only a few years ago but has impressed his community and his high school teachers, coaches and guidance counselors by his motivation," said Briarcliffe College President Dr. George Santiago, Jr. "He has successfully dedicated himself to studies, sports and youth leadership. We’re pleased to welcome him to Briarcliffe College."
A diligent student with ambitions to become a detective, Mr. Bermeo undertook regents physics and precalculus in his senior year of high school. He also played on the varsity soccer team and may pursue this sport at Briarcliffe College.
In addition to his winning essay, the Briarcliffe College Hispanic Scholarship Committee was impressed with Mr. Bermeo’s record as a leader in clubs and activities, including his selection to serve this year as a delegate in Albany for the Hispanic Leaders Club, representing the Eastern Suffolk district. The Briarcliffe College Hispanic Scholarship program was introduced in 2008 in "recognition of the rapidly growing Hispanic population in the metropolitan area and the need for financial assistance to afford higher education." Selected by a review committee, the students may be enrolled at any of the Briarcliffe College sites: Queens, Patchogue or Bethpage. Scholarship funds may only be applied to education costs and scholarship winners must be continuously enrolled full-time and maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA throughout the scholarship award period.
In his winning essay, Luis Bermeo wrote: "Clearly, education, in all its forms, is the golden key to success for Hispanics."
